Bear Canyon, located in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains, is part of the original Elena Gallegos Land Grant gifted to the school by the Simms Family. Historically, Bear Canyon has been used for sheep herding and cattle grazing, as well as the Bear Canyon Project, a program that pre-dates the Academy’s Experiential Education department.
Encompassing 270 acres of wilderness, Bear Canyon also includes Simms Cabin, a facility used for alumni and school events, Academy club gatherings, and educational class outings. The Experiential Education department uses Bear Canyon for its 6th and 7th grade programming. Students are also actively involved in Bear Canyon through the community service program.
